Honoring George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways"

A name with a Story

Our Siemens 001 Locomotive: Honoring George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways"

At Unicom Tranzit, we believe that every locomotive has its own story — and our first Siemens Smartron in Romania, locomotive 001, carries a very special one.

We are proud to have named this milestone locomotive George Stephenson, in honor of the British engineer often called "The Father of Railways." Stephenson’s pioneering work in the 19th century laid the foundations for modern railway transport. From designing the famous "Rocket" locomotive to standardizing railway gauge, his vision helped shape the future of railways across the world.

By giving this name to our first Siemens Smartron — itself a symbol of technological progress — we pay tribute to the spirit of innovation and determination that Stephenson embodied. It reflects our own commitment to pushing forward, modernizing our fleet, and continuing to build meaningful connections across Europe.

Locomotive 001 – George Stephenson is more than just the first Siemens Smartron in Romania; it’s a statement about our journey, our respect for history, and our aspirations for the future of rail transport.
